Why would any Kenyan spend more on a foreign album than a local one? Simple, they know how to market their music. Local music is 1 word to me, clones. They try so hard to be who they are not and when they finally release something good, they go to USA. So, lemie ask you who would go buy an album that has dirty songs like “We Kamu?” I like songs that have a positive message hence my addiction to rock music like Linkin Park.
Another thing, the Music Society of Kenya(MSK) are waaaaay out of their minds if they think I am going to waste money on music that I dont even respect. Seriously, these MSK people were stopping private cars and demanding that they are paid 2000Kshs for them to continue listening to music in their cars. What? I just……..argh! The worst thing is that they had police protection and were threatening to remove your car stereo if you dont pay up. So bassically, music in Kenya has become harrasment. If they want to make money, make better music.
The only musicians I like are Nameless, Jua Cali and Eric W. The reason is quite simple, they are passionate about what they sing and they have their own style. Bamboo, Nonini nad Wahu try. The rest are plain old copy cats.
In short, I wouldnt spend 1000 on local music because its not that good and the artists(most of them) dont sing for the love of it but for the money. People invest in natural talent and not forced talent. Didge had talent, but he wasted it all.
So how far do you see Local Kenyan music going?

What? They were demanding you pay for listening to their music? Goodness! On what basis?

No no man. I disagree with this “you who would go buy an album that has dirty songs like “We Kamu?””
We all have different tastes. If you remember correctly, ‘We kamu’ was a BIG hit. I was in High School back then and I remember it was on Capital’s Top 9 at 9 for months.
I don’t really think the type of music we do is the problem. To me, the problem is promotion and management.

MSK are handling the situation the wrong way. They are demanding and not earning. The grounds that they want you to pay is based on the assumption that everybody pirates their music. The claim that all music in your car or at home is not legally bought.
I wouldnt buy the song “We Kamu”. What message is is sending?

True man; Kenyan music sucks. I get irritated every time I here “new single from….” then its some weak lyrics and beat… i hate these wa-genge ish (excluding Jua Kali). The Kenyan Music Scene is stunted in growth and the afro fusion is also blown out of proportion - they aren’t all that.
